TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Water discharge in Sermo Reservoir, Kulon Progo District, Yogyakarta, have decreased by four meters, threatening the availability of irrigation water.

On Thursday, October 15, head of Sermo Reservoir Conservation Prabowo Andryanto said that 3,300 hectares of paddy field is directly watered from Sermo Reservoir in Pengasih.

“The current condition is quite normal, but if the drought continues to occur, water discharge in Sermo Reservoir will rapidly decrease.  This is seriously threatening agricultural lands which watered directly from Sermo Reservoir,” said Prabowo.

Prabowo said the previous water level was at 136.60 meters above sea level, but now has shrunk to 132.49 meters above sea level or down by four meters.

Although water discharge has decreasing, it will not affect the availability of drinking water for people, especially customer of local drinking water company (PDAM).

DPAM Kulon Progo Director Jumantoro said water discharge in Sermo Reservoir did not affect the amount of its production.  Clean water production from Sermo Reservoir has recently reached 60 liters per second.  It could reach beyond 150 liters per second, and PDAM has yet optimized its water production.

“As long as there is water in Sermo Reservoir and Progo River is still flowing, water requirements for the people will not be an issue,” said Prabowo.
