TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Karawang administration in West Java will form a region-owned enterprise (BUMD) operating in the agriculture sector in a bid to boost the regional initiated income from the sector.
Acting Karawang Regent Cellica Nurrachadiana said that she wanted to develop Karawang into one of the country’s rice production bases.
“We will form a BUMD in the future to improve farmers’ welfare. We will guarantee the capital and the marketing for the farmers,” Cellica said in Karawang on Friday, September 25, 2015.
According to Cellica, Karawang has an annual rice surplus of 550,000 tons that the region would have a major role in supprssing the national rice imports. With such a region-owned enterprise, Cellica hopes that farmers would be able to improve their welfare because the price of dried husked rice (GKG) has reached Rp5,300 (37 cents US$) per kilogram, and the productivity has reached 10 tons per hectare.
