Govt to Issue Regulations on LRT, Fast Train

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government will issue two presidential decrees about light rapid transit and Jakarta - Bandung fast train to follow up on the financial note delivered by President Joko Widodo last week.

Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung said based on the financial note, Jokowi will focus on developing transportation. “President wants LRT not only in Jakarta, but also in eight other cities,” said Pramono on Tuesday, August 18.

The other cities that will have LRT are Bandung, Yogyakarta, Medan, Surabaya, Palembang and Semarang. Jokowi wants LRT construction to begin soon because Jakarta will be a pilot city for other regions. “The decree will be issued on August 31 at the maximum,” said Pramono

Pramono said LRT development in Jakarta still faces many problems and asked the Jakarta government to quickly solve all of the problems as soon as possible so that Jakarta will have no burden in the future.

Pramono continued that Jokowi wants the project to be built soon to reduce traffic congestion as losses caused by congestion in Jakarta reach Rp33 trillion per year. The monorail project, stalled for years, is also being considered to be revived.

Despite wanting LRT and fast train to be developed fast, Jokowi does not want to rush to avoid making the same mistake in developing mass transportation.
