TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel has appointed the National Logistics Agency (Bulog) to import beef.
Minister Gobel will issue a license to import 50,000 cattle from Australia to reduce price. “We give the permission to Bulog,” said Gobel on Monday.
Gobel said this policy was made after a meeting with the Agriculture Ministry, Bulog and the police on Monday. He said he is ready to cooperate to monitor domestic cattle production.
Gobel continued that this import is the last resort to maintain beef stocks, following strikes by beef merchants in several regions as a protest due to supply shortage.
Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman declined to comment on the import license. Based on the procedure, import license issued by the Trade Ministry must be based on recommendation letter from the Agriculture Ministry.
He added that he has surveyed feedlots for cattle. The result is that the national cattle stock has reached 160,000, which are enough for the next four months.
"The import is to meet domestic needs," he said.
