TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) Arist Merdeka Sirait said that Indonesia is on sexual violence emergency. Arist pointed out that Komnas PA data revealed that 21 million children in Indonesia have been exposed to violence.
"Around 58 percent of them are victims of sexual violence," said Arist during the Indonesian Child Congress in Batu, Malang, East Java, on Thursday, August 6, 2015.
Arist added that the majority of the perpetrators have close relationship to the victims. Therefore, Arist suggested parents to pay special attention to their kids.
Moreover, Arist said that law enforcement officials are not entirely siding with the victims. Arist even stated that the prevailing law has not provided a proper sense of justice for victims of child violence.
Arist argued that a national movement on child protection must be initiated immediately to prevent future incidents of child violence.
