TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chief of Transportation Commission of the House of Representatives (DPR), Muhidin, said that the number of accidents during Eid's homecoming this year is still high. There are in total of 3,049 incidents and 657 casualties.
“The number of casualties equals to that of a massacre. We must react to this," he told Tempo on Sunday July 26. “The government should be able to suppress the number.”
However, he claimed that the government has decently prepared homecoming operations. He emphasized that most of the accidents took place post Eid celebration.
He added that there was only limited number of post-Eid free ride, compared to that of the homecoming season. "People then tend to force themselves to drive back to their city," he said.
Nevertheless, the number of accidents this year dropped significantly compared to that of 2014. There were only 3,049 accidents, a 21.5 percent drop compared to last year, and 657 casualties, an 8 percent dropped compared to last year.
