TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Partogi Pangaribuan, Director General of International Trade at the Trade Ministry confirmed that import beef quota for the third quarter of 2015 will be limited to 50,000. "Only 50,000 cows from Australia [can be imported] in the third quarter," Partogi said on Monday, July 13, 2015.
The number of beef import quota for Q3 of 2015 is significantly lower compared to the April-June period, where the government allows 250,000 cattle to be imported.
Partogi explained that beef import is still needed to maintain a steady supply of beef and maintain price stability in markets. Based on the Trade Ministry data, the average price of beef in July 2015 is1.4 percent higher compared to the previous month.
Partogi added that beef import quota will continue to be lowered to allow local farmers to compete in the business.
