TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla met with four Ministers from the current cabinet to discuss the utilization of the Rupiah at the Vice President's Office on Friday, June 26, 2015, in Jakarta.
Present at the meeting were the Minister for Trade, Rahmat Gobel, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Sofyan Djalil, Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan, as well as Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro.
Kalla said that the discussion was related to the utilization of the Rupiah in transactions made by companies. "We need to regulate how the US Dollar comes into the domestic market, because that is how we acquire our foreign exchange," Kalla said.
According to Kalla, a review has been discussed for quite some time - relating to the government's plan to decrease the usage of foreign currencies in transactions committed in the domestic market.
Recently, through issuing Bank Indonesia (BI) Decree No. 17/3/PBI/2015, the government hope to help stabilize the Rupiah's fluctuation by making it mandatory to make transactions using the Rupiah in Indonesia.
It is known that this was not the first such decree that was issued to that effect - as Article 23 (1) of Law No. 7/2011 on Currencies stated that the Rupiah is the legal tender for transactions within Indonesia.
