Minister Susi Meets Jokowi, Discusses Illegal Fishing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime and Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti meet with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Monday, June 22, 2015, to talk about illegal fishing. "[I meet with President Jokowi] to report the illegal fishing issues where there were more than 20,000 tons of confiscated fishes ready to be auctioned," Minister Susi said after meeting the President.
Susi added that other issues she had discussed with the President are related to the fishing sector, such as slavery and fishing tax. Susi said that the President also discussed how to promote Indonesia's fishing industry.
"The President is annoyed with our fishery sector, we are rich [in resources] but why it is enjoyed by other [countries]," Susi said.
In order to overcome illegal fishing, according to Susi, efforts to empower our fishermen is an absolute necessary.
