TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of Bina Marga (Highways) of the Ministry of Transportation Hediyanto W. Husaini said that accidents that happened in Cikopo-Palimanan (Cipali) toll road after it was operated for one week were mostly caused by fatigue experienced by the driver.
Hediyanto said based on an investigation done by the Public Works Ministry, 90 percent of the accidents in the past one week happened in the toll road from Surabaya, Yogyakarta, to Jakarta.
"It turns out that their resting time is now shortened as they now find a longer new toll road,” Hediyanto said in South Jakarta on Saturday (20/6).
He also said that based on the result of another research, so far, drivers often take rest during their trip along northern coast area (Pantura).
"They’re probably excited with the new toll road and they also pushed themselves to hard during their trips; so they have less rest,” he said.
According to Hediyanto, following the accidents, the Transportation Ministry would add urge drivers not to forget to take a rest during the trip.
"We’re going to inform them the location of rest areas and the obligation to take a rest if they get sleepy,” he said.
Hediyanto also hoped in the upcoming Eid Day homecoming season (mudik) all drivers will capitalize on all facilities and services provided to prevent accidents.
