Jokowi Signs Decree on Price Control

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has signed the presidential decree on basic living needs and important goods price control, Trade Ministry Rachmat Gobel said at his office on Tuesday, June 16, 2015.
"I heard that the decree has been signed. Now, we're waiting for the decree to be legalized at the Justice and Human Rights Ministry," Rachmat said.
Rachmat explained that the decree is a mandate of Law No. 7/2014 on Trade, which grants the the government with the authority to control prices in certain times.
Rachmat added that the decree was issued "in an attempt to maintain prices of strategic goods, particularly staple food." Rachmat added that similar steps have been taken by neighboring countries including Malaysia and Thailand.
The presidential decree regulates 14 types of basic necessities categorized into three groups. The first group includes agricultural products, such as rice, soy bean, tempeh, chili, and red onion. Meanwhile, sugar, vegetable oil and flour fall into basic living needs produced by industries. The last group includes farming or fishery products, such as beef, chicken, eggs, and fishes.
