TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa said she established cooperation with the Swedish Embassy to deal with prostitution in Indonesia. “The ministry has communicated with the Swedish Embassy,” said Khofifah on Monday.
Khofifah said she was impressed with Sweden’s success in decreasing the demand for prostitution. In three years, Sweden the demand for prostitution by 80 percent and prostitution services by 75 percent.
Khofifah said one of Sweden’s keys in decreasing the demand for prostitution is by displaying the identity or the face of the customer in various mass media and social media.
Sweden also fines those who engage in prostitution. However, Khofifah said social punishment by displaying the face of the customer in social media is more effective than penalty. “The customer will be shamed because their friends and relatives will know,” said Khofifah on Sunday.
There are 48 prostitution localization in East Java and 12 of them have been shut down. One of the localization that will be closed is at Ponorogo Regency. The localization is considered as one of the largest localization in Indonesia.
After shutting down the localization, the local government must play an active role in creating job fields, especially in regions where prostitutes come from. “The local government’s is the key in cutting the chain of prostitution in Indonesia,” said Khofifah.
