  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In a bid to curb inflation ahead of the fasting month and the Eid Day, Trade Minister Rahmat Gobel said that his ministry would investigate supplies of basic commodities in the warehouses owned by businessmen who become speculators.

"Speculators must not take advantage of the situation that can bring anxiety to the people,” Rahmat said on Friday (5/6).

He also said that his ministry would work with the Home Affairs Ministry and the police in the investigation.

He added that the three institutions would make a mapping of the warehouses of basic commodities so that the government will know the amount of supply that is ready to be distributed to the market.

In the meantime, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said that his ministry was ready to instruct regional governments to take this measure. So far, he said, many regional governments do not understand that chain of basic commodities supplies in their regions.

"Governors, mayors, and regents must be responsible to the price stability in their regions,” Tjahjo said.

Rahmat also pledged that he would negotiate with the speculators so as not to tamper with the price drastically during the fasting month and if the ministry finds violation in their actions, the Ministry would leave it to the police.
