Staple Food Prices Increase as Ramadhan Draws Near

TEMPO.CO, Bojonegoro - As the holy month of Ramadhan draws near, prices of staple foods have increased by more than 20 percent. At the Pasar Besar and Pasar Banjarejo in Bojonegoro, prices of staple foods have even increased by 50 percent.
Sugar, which was previously sold at Rp. 9,700 per kilogram, are now sold at Rp. 12,000 per kilogram. Eggs are now being sold at Rp. 20,000 per kilogram from the previously Rp. 18,000 per kilogram, while cooking oil are being sold at Rp. 12,500 per kilogram from the previously Rp. 11,000.
"The prices increase too fast," said Solekah, one of the vendors at the Pasar Besar in Bojonegoro to Tempo on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.
Didik Hari Supriyadi, official of the Industry and Trade Agency of Bojonegoro admitted that there had been a price increase. However, Didik claimed that price had only increase by seven percent.
The Bojonegoro local government and the National Logistics Agency said that they will attempt to stabilize the prices by holding market operations in 28 sub-districts in the beginning of Ramadhan and one week before the Eid Al-Fitr later in July 2015.
