TEMPO.CO, Tangerang – The Trade Ministry yesterday destroyed dozens of China-made water pumps for not meeting the Indonesian National Standards (SNI). This was part of the government's commitment to tighten monitor over imported goods ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) at the later part of this year.
"Product supervision will continue being improved following the implementation of free trade between [ASEAN] countries," Widodo, the ministry's director general of standardization and consumer protection said yesterday.
Strict supervision is expected to encourage the creation of a healthy business climate between domestic and imported products, as well as securingthe domestic market share.
According to Widodo, free trade will provide consumers with more product choices. However, lack of control will result in an influx of poor quality, even dangerous products.
Seventy-two MTYM Motoyama GP-125 water pumps from China were burned at the Pantai Indah Dadap warehouse facility in Tangerang yesterday. Based on findings and laboratory tests, the 125-watt water pumps are flammable and could explode easily.
The water pumps were imported by CV Maximart Indonesia and distributed by PT Dinamika Dwiputra Perkasa Jaya.
Widodo said the SNI certificate for the two companies have been revoked by the Product Certification Institution (Lespro). The registration number of the water pumps had also been retracted.
