Rupiah Slips to Rp12,987 per US$

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Asian currencies were corrected against the US dollar after most The Federal Reserves on Thursday signaled that it might raise interest rates this year. The statement helped the greenback reinforced its position in global currency markets, prompting investors to repurchase dollar-denominated assets.

As a result, the rupiah fell 24 points (0.18 percent) to Rp12,987 per US dollar. The rupiah was also corrected by an inflation rate that reached 0.36 percent.

Ibrahim, executive director of Ekulibrium Komoditi Berjangka, said most investors believe that The Fed will adjust rates this year to maintain growth. Right now, he said, investors are just waiting for how much will the hike be.

Today the government will release the GDP data, which analysts predict to decelerate to 4.8 to 5.0 percent. The likely slowdown is expected to serve as an additional negative sentiment for the rupiah, which is predicted to be traded between Rp12,950 and Rp13,050 per US dollar.
