TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Puan Maharani, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, has called on the country’s women to play more significant roles in the society—among them to become a leader at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

“If there is a woman who becomes a KPK leader, the impact will be huge on the republic,” she said when attending the commemoration of Kartini Day in the front yard of the KPK headquarters on Tuesday, April 21, 2015.

Puan said women’s involvement in the nation’s organizations had shown delightful progress, as evident in the existence of eight female ministers in the Working Cabinet—doubled the figure in the cabinet of then president Yudhoyono.

Puan said the number of female officials in state institutions were also on the rise, accounting for 48 percent of the total civil servants in the country. “Sixteen percent of them even occupy echelon I positions,” Puan said.

Thus, Puan called on women to boost their leadership capacity and not to be afraid to engage in organizational activities.

Separately, KPK chief Taufiqurrachman Ruki voiced a similar call. “I challenge women to apply to become a KPK leader,” he said, while reminding the public of the planned leadership restructuring at the anti-graft body in late December.
