28 March 2015 19:00 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA total of 280 boxers have registered to participate in the President Cup International Boxing Championship to be held in Palembang, South Sumatra, on April 19 to 25.

"The number of registered participants has now reached 280, which is increasing ahead of the event," John Amanupunyo, the head of competition and matches of the Indonesian Boxing Association (PB Pertina), stated on Thursday while fielding questions related to the number of confirmed participants in the event, as quoted by Antara News.

In mid-March, only 180 athletes from several countries had registered to participate in the championship. However, since then, the number has risen, and several countries, which had not registered their athletes, have now confirmed their participation.

He said the organizer would still wait until April 1, 2015, for more athletes to register in the championship.

"Korea and Australia have not yet registered their athletes. However, the two nations have already expressed their readiness to participate in the event," he noted.

According to data, several countries that have registered their athletes to participate in the event are Bangladesh, with three male and two female athletes; Britain, with three male and two female boxers; Colombia, with four male and two female athletes; Timor-Leste, with seven male and six female boxers; Hong Kong, with four male and one female athlete; and Indonesia, with six male and four female boxers.

Contingents from 25 countries are scheduled to arrive at the venue two days before the opening.

With regard to the Indonesian national team, he revealed his plan to field 36 athletes in the event, which was initially to be held in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Other contesting athletes include Beatrix Suguro from East Kalimantan in the 48-kilogram women's flyweight category, Novita Sinadia from Jakarta in the 51-kilogram women's flyweight category, Norbertha Tajum from West Papua in the 54-kilogram women's bantamweight category, Kristina Jambay from West Papua in the 57-kilogram women's featherweight category, and Magdalena Kambayong from Papua in the 60-kilogram women's lightweight category.
