TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini ranks at number 24 in Fortune magazine's Top 50 Greatest World Leaders list. Fortune wrote on Thursday that Risma was included in the list for her success in transforming Surabaya into "a new kind of Indonesian metropolis, one that celebrates green space and environmental stability."
Thanks to Risma, the magazine wrote, the city of 2.7 million people--once known for its pollution and congestion—now boasts 11 landscaped parks and a variety of green spaces designed to absorb water and reduce flooding.
Other leaders in the list include Apple CEO Tim Cook, European Central Bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi, China president Xi Jinping, Pope Francis, and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who perches at the list's top five.
Earlier on February 3, Risma was given the World Mayor Commendation award after being elected as the world's third best mayor by the World Mayor Project, a foundation that promotes and assesses the performance of mayors all over the globe.
In one of the comments written by visitors of worldmayor.com, Risma is said to have been successful in implementing pro-environment policies, paying attention to social aspects, and consistently supporting economic progress.
