Toyota Raises Investment in Indonesia by Rp20tn

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. will invest Rp20 trillion (US$1.6 billion) more in Indonesia, in a bid to make the country a production base for manufacturing vehicles for the export market.
The investment plan was announced by Toyota Motor president Akio Toyoda, who yesterday accepted President Joko Widodo as the latter visited the Toyota headquarters in Nagoya, Japan.
"We hope Toyota will serve as a Japanese investment ambassador in Indonesia because it has a long investment history in Indonesia," said Trade Minister Rahmat Gobel who accompanied Widodo.
In addition to cars, Toyota will export car parts from Indonesia. To support their investment in Indonesia, Jokowi said Toyota's management has asked for easing in obtaining work visas, infrastructure, as well as issues related to ports.
In Indonesia, Toyota dominated the four-wheeler market with an average share of more than 30 percent per year. Throughout 2014, Toyota's sales in Indonesia reached 399,746 units, or 33.3 percent of the total car market.
In January 2015 alone, 27,175 units of Toyota cars were sold in Indonesia, which accounted for 28.8 percent of the market volume.
