TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - A crowd of hundreds of people flocked State Islamic University (UIN) of Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, on Wednesday March 11, 2015. The crowd were voicing protest, opposing public screening of controversial movie Senyap that retells the horror of 1965 massacre in North Sumatra.
"Do we look like we want another communist view? We say no!" said Umar Said, Head of Islam Forum of Yogyakarta.
The crowd asked that the screening and discussion were to be dismissed. They believed that the movie is a communist propaganda, attempting to bend the Indonesian history. They also accused the committee of violating screening term, as the movie failed gain clearance from censorship agency.
On the other hand, students from the Social Movement Institute (SMI), National Students Front, PMII, GMNI, and other organizations claimed that the discussion was meant to provide notion and polemic. They believed that Senyap can give more insights on how it was during the New Order regime, in 1965.
