TEMPO.CO, Rome - Italy will deploy 4,800 troops on the streets throughout the country, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
Italian security chiefs said that they would guard important sites and targets until June 2015.
Italian media said that about 500 troops would be deployed in Rome, where army troops already help guard diplomatic missions and residences, synagogues and Jewish schools.
The troops are expected to be deployed at tourists sports such as archaeological sites and monuments.
The move comes after attacks by gunmen who killed two people in Copenhagen last Saturday and 17 people in Paris last month last month. The government considers Rome as the most sensitive because it is home to the Vatican.
In the past, Islamist groups have threatened Pope Francis and the Roman Catholic Church but Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said there was no specific threat against Italy or Vatican.
