TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For years, American-made animation films have been dominating screens in Indonesia, but soon, film enthusiasts will enjoy the “Battle of Surabaya”, an animation film made by local hands.
The film is produced by MSV Pictures, a subsidiary of an IT college STMIK Amikom Yogyakarta.
“It is scheduled to finish on March-April,” said Head of Amikom and producer M. Suyatno.
The film tells the adventure of 13-year-old Musa, a boy who makes living by polishing shoes in Surabaya in 1945. The battle for independence against the Allies armies had forced Musa to get involved in the famed battle on November 10 –which is commemorated as Indonesian National Heroes Day. He was assigned by the Indonesian fighters as a courier for secret messages.
The trailer of the film had won some awards including Hollywood Golden Trailer Awards in 2014 and International Movie Trailer Festival in 2013. Even before the film is finished, world’s renowned film producer Walt Disney had shown interest on the movie.
“There are dramatic and psychological adventure in the film. The western-like cinematography makes Battle of Surabaya different to other Indonesian films. Most of Indonesian film only offer dramatic effect,” Suyanto added.
“There is no glory in war” is a message the film intents to share.
“Heroes are people who success in tackling their ego,” said Suyanto who claimed he has yet tomake decision regarding Walt Disney’s offer.
