TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf "JK" Kalla said that the government will perform assertive measures towards illegal fishing boats, including shooting them down on sight. JK said that Indonesia will shoot down illegal fishing boats without warning.

"Do not mess with us," he said in a 'Tempo Economic Outlook' seminar.

JK said that the measure is a part of the commitment to uphold maritime sovereignty. "The assertive measures is a sign on how serious we are in maritime matter," he said.

Moreover, the measures is not solely an initiative from the Maritime Affair Ministry. Other government institution began to consider using assertive measures, such as the Indonesian Navy. Chief of Public Information Division of the Navy, First Admiral Manahan Simorangkir said that his men are ready to shoot down illegal fishing boats.

"The navy is set to sink those boats. The maritime law allows sinking illegal foreign boats," he said.
