TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (ICAO: GIA) signed a codeshare agreement with Myanmar Airways International (ICAO: MAI). GIA director Emirsyah Satar said that the partnership is aimed at connecting Garuda's passengers with Myanmar.
A codeshare agreement, or simply codeshare, is a business arrangement where two or more airlines share the same flight.
Through this partnership, Garuda (IATA code GA) will be able to publish Myanmar Airways' (IATA code 8M) flight numbers in Garuda's Bangkok-Yangon and Singapore-Yangon flights. Meanwhile, Myanmar Airways will publish Garuda's flight number on its Jakarta-Bangkok and Jakarta-Singapore flights.
In welcoming the ASEAN Sky Policy in 2015, Satar said, Garuda plans to open direct flights to Myanmar once the ideal passenger traffic in the Jakarta-Yangon flights is achieved.
MAI managing director, Shi Tu, said that Indonesia is an important market for Myanmar, with some 55,000 passengers traveling between the two countries every year.
