TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti, said that fuel subsidy tends to be misused by a group people. "Therefore, [subsidy] distribution often misses the real target," she said.
Minister Susi also said that fuel subsidy changes fishermen's attitude, causing them to shift their focus from catching fish to selling subsidized fuel. Moreover, subsidized fuel often became hard to find in several regions.
On the other hand, Susi said that many foreign boats enjoy Indonesian subsidized fuel. She also claimed that government boat often sells diesel fuel in the middle of the ocean.
Therefore, Susi urged businesses to support the fuel price increase. She added that the Rp 300 trillion subsidy can be allocated to other needs. "At least, Rp 100 trillion can be used to improve education," she said.
