Broken Water Pipe Leaves Meter-deep Road Hole in Tanah Abang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An intersection in Central Jakarta's Tanah Abang district is jammed as PT PAM Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) works to cover up a gaping hole on the road.
A road collapse left a 1.3-meter deep hole with a three-meter diameter on the intersection of Penjernihan Street and KH Mas Mansyur Street, due to a waterpipe leakage.
Palyja official Budi Santoso said workers deliberately created the hole to fic the pipe located beneath it. Budi said the leaked pipe belongs to the Local Government Owned Water Utilities (Perusahaan Daerah Air Minum/PDAM).
"The earth underneath the road was eroded due to the pipe leak, as a result, the road cracked," Budi said.
One of the on-site workers from the Public Works Department, Noviansyah, said they plan to start repairing the road Thursday night when traffic is light. "We expect it to finish by tomorrow (Friday) morning," he told Tempo.
