TEMPO.CO, JakartaPolice Chief General Sutarman stated that the mass organization Islamic Defender Front (FPI) must be disbanded.

"They often use violence when rallying. I think this organization is not worth keeping," said Sutarman on Friday as quoted by Antara News.

However, the chief of police emphasized it is not within his authority to disband a mass organization. According to the law, only a court order can disband a mass organization in Indonesia, said Sutarman.

Last Friday, October 3, Jakarta police detained 20 members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) for their alleged involvement in riots and vandalism during rallies at City Hall and at the Jakarta Legislative Assembly (DPRD) Building.

Jakarta Metropolitan police spokesman Senior Commissioner Rikwanto said police believe FPI members tried to create disruptions, as they were found carrying knives and other weapons.

Further, police confiscated two cars used in the demonstration.

Rikwanto said the demonstrators were demanding the appointment of deputy governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama to replace Jakarta governor Joko Widodo, who is the President-elect.

As per the law, Basuki will automatically become governor when Joko Widodo assumes the presidency of Indonesia.

Eleven police officers were hurt in the incident, Rikwanto said.

The clash between the police and FPI members broke out around 2:30pm when FPI members threw stones at the DPRD building, leaving seven cars damaged, according to officials.
