TEMPO.CO, Kediri - PT Gudang Garam Tbk has fired over 2,000 of its employee due to efficiency. The Kediri-based cigarette factory claimed to be in financial crisis, following the tight regulation on cigarettes.
Deputy Head of PR Iwhan Tricahyono in his press conference that said that the HR had offered early retirement program to the workers of unfiltered cigarette (SKT) and operations. "This is to avoid the worst scenario," he said.
Moreover, Iwhan added that cigarette sales tend to decrease lately, especially after the issuance of government policy. The policy on advertisement limitation in mass media and the warning sign on the package have not been in favor of them.
Iwhan claimed that the early retirement offer has received good response from the employees. Since announced on October 6, there have been 2,088 employees signing in for the program. "We have tried to survive a little longer, compared to other company," he said.
