TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said the secretary general of the Islamic Defenders Front’s (FPI) Jakarta executive council, Novel Bamukmin, surrendered yesterday to the police. Novel was immediately investigated by the Jakarta Police’s National Security Sub Directorate.
“He’s still under investigation. There is a big possibility that he will be detained tonight,” Rikwanto told Tempo via SMS on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.
Rikwanto said Novel came last night to the Jakarta Police headquarters at around 4 p.m. yesterday.
Earlier, the Jakarta Police placed Novel, a cleric, on its most wanted list (DPO) for allegedly being the orchestrator of the FPI rally in front of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD DKI Jakarta) complex that turned chaotic on Friday.
Novel was one of the coordinators of the protest who also signed the notice on the rally submitted to the police. FPI members were hurling stones at the police during the brutal protest, injuring 10 policemen.
The police named Novel and 20 other FPI members as suspects in the incident. Novel, however, went missing upon his naming as a suspect.
