Govt' to Construct New Airport in West Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry and the Tembrauw Regency Government in West Papua Province have agreed to construct the Werur Airport in Tembrauw in 2015. "The project will be finished in three years," said Acting Director General of Air Transportation Santoso Eddy Wibowo.
Santoso said that the ministry has provided Rp 30 billion allocated in the 2015 State Budget. The budget will be allocated for initial phase of the airport construction, such as building runway and taxiway.
Tembrauw Regent Gabriel Asem, said that the regency has provided Rp 9 billion for Werur Airport construction, and that site clearance has taken place since 2012. He claimed that Werur Airport will be build at a strategic location to support the tourism industry potential of Tembrauw Regency. Asem also added that Tembrauw was once used by the United States for an airbase during World War II.
