Former Genesis Vocalist Honored At Progressive Music Awards

Peter Gabriel.

TEMPO.CO, London - Former vocalist of British rock band Genesis, Peter Gabriel, has been honored at the annual Progressive Music Awards for his five-decade long music career.

"Despite prog probably being the most derided musical genre of all time there were - as today - a lot of extraordinary musicians trying to break down the barriers to reject the rules of music,” said Gabriel as quoted by BBC.

Gabriel is more comfortable with the label of progressive music compared to his early music career. The man who was born on February 13, 1950 also said that he and his band mates were genuinely pioneering at their early times.

"We didn't always get it right, but when it did work we could move people and get some magic happening," Gabriel continued. "I see it all as a very healthy part of growing up."

Gabriel parted from Genesis in 1975 and enjoyed fame as solo musician in 1986 with his album 'So'. Two singles on the album: 'Don’t Give Up’ and ‘Sledgehammer’ topped the charts.

Despite his old age, Gabriel continues to exist in the music industry. He actively participates in the ‘Back to Front' tour since 2012 that presents musicians who had been collaborating with him.

"From massive worldwide hits through startling experimentation and pioneering work with world music, as well as his fantastic work outside of music and an astute grasp of technology, it really is an honor to pay tribute to Peter in this way," Jerry Ewing, the editor of Prog magazine, described his view about the singer.

Meanwhile, Peter said the progressive genre would not be a mainstream. It is rather similar to Jazz in the 1950s and 1960s, but still has a place.
