TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - It is so easy for us to grab on any snacks or foods when we feel hungry. But there are some type of foods that instead of making us full, will make us even more hungry.
1. White Bread
The white bread has been processed to remove the bran, which takes away most of the filling fiber content of your toast. It also has a high glycaemic index score, meaning you’ll get a spike of energy and then feeling hungry again in a short time.
Choose breads that are whole wheat or whole grain instead, as their fiber content means they’ll be digested slower, leaving you fuller for longer.
2. Salty snacks
Salty fried potatoes and vinegar chips are not only unhealthy, they can also leave you craving more food to satisfy your hunger.
3. Juice
The process of making juice omits the fruit fibers from the juice. You will probably feel slightly satisfied but that only because you are drinking sweet drinks. Without fiber, you’ll feel hungry again quickly and there is a chance for blood sugar to increase that cause fatigue.
4. Fast food
The sugar and high salt content in fast food like burgers and fries can lead to sugar spike that can lead to hunger and dehydration, which is often mistaken for hunger. So it is the best to avoid munching on fast food too often.
5. Alcohol
A research found that alcohol decreases the production of leptin, the satiety hormone, in our body. The alcohol consumption during the clubbing time will increase dehydration effect and you will eat more food to refill the energy your body thinks it’s lost.
6. Italian Food
Pasta and pizza has effects that are similar to the white bread because of its making process.
7. Sushi
It is true that raw fish is healthy, but when it is combined with sweetened white sushi rice, you won’t feel full for long. White rice is digested quickly and has relatively little fiber. Sushi with brown rice can be an option to stay full for longer.
8. Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweetener triggers brain to expect the energy boost the body would get from ordinary sugars. This may create more hunger as the body tries to make up for the lack of energy it’s expecting.
9. Cereal
Cereal is healthy only if you make the right pick. There is lots of cereal on the market that has high sugar content and little fiber, so that it will increase the blood sugar level. Avoid consuming cereal in the morning to stay full for longer.
