TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe former chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organization, Hasyim Muzadi, has called on the people to not doubt Joko Widodo's leadership for Indonesia in the period of 2014-2019.

"In the past five years, Jokowi (Joko Widodo) has been promoted from a Solo mayor to Jakarta governor and now president-elect," he said before hundreds of Islamic clerics and scholars from 34 provinces in the country, at a gathering at Al-Hikam Islamic boarding school on Saturday, as reported by Antara News.

Several national figures were seen at the gathering, including the chairman of the General Elections organizers Ethics Council, Jimly Ashiddiiqie, and defense forces (TNI) commander General Moeldoko.

Hasyim said Jokowi had passed the stage, being promoted from a local to a national leader.

"This is a blessing that we must take care of together," he said.

He noted there are two qualities that a leader must have, honesty and modesty.

"It is honesty that must control desires and not the other way round," he said.

Hasyim hoped that, with Jokowi's modesty, he could become a role model for provincial governors, district heads and city mayors.

Hasyim also called upon Jokowi not to question the clerics that support him.
