TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The secretary general of the Constitutional Court (MK) Janedjri M. Gaffar said MK had coordinated with the Jakarta Police to close Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat - which runs directly in front of the MK - throughout the final hearing and ruling of the election result dispute case.
"We are closing the street to ensure that tomorrow's hearing goes without a hitch," said Janedjri to Tempo earlier today.
Janedjri believed the rally is unlikely to happen in front of the Court. "The mass would probably congregate around the Medan Merdeka roundabout," he said, as the police planned on securing the MK by establishing four overlapping security clearance zones located inside the Court, outside the Court, on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat, and on the streets heading towards Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat.
Janedjri said it was imperative that the proceedings tomorrow run without a hitch, as there is no higher legal entity that has the authority to overrule a ruling made by the MK. As such, Janedjri claimed the Court had taken every possible measure to ensure the validity and fairness of the proceedings.
The Central Jakarta District Police’s Chief of Traffic Police Sr. Comr. Sakat said diversions would be put in place if the mass demonstrations occur in front of the Court. "If the mass congregates in front of the Court the way they did today, we have no option but to close off the street completely," said Sakat to Tempo.
Around 1,000 supporters of the Prabowo-Hatta presidential ticket is protesting in front of the MK today, demanding that the Court overturn the ruling of the General Elections Commission (KPU) which saw the Jokowi-JK presidential ticket being declared as the winners of the 2014 Presidential Election. Prabowo-Hatta supporters have congregated in front of the Court since 9 a.m., occupying three lanes on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat.
