Aceh Demands Authorization of Regional Flag

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah demands the completion of qanun (regional regulation) on Aceh flag and traditional symbol. Zaini said that the issue should not be discussed only in the Domestic Affair Ministry, but also with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

Zaini added that he is skeptical with the effort of Domestic Minister Gamawan Fauz. "We have had more than 10 meetings with the ministry, yet no result so far," Zaini told Tempo.

Since approved by Aceh Regional House in March, the central government has been rejected Qanun on Aceh flag, stating that the flag resembles that of Free Aceh Movement (GAM). On the other hand, Aceh government argued that the separatist issue has been resolved in Helsinki, back in 2005.

Zaini expressed his optimism that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono concerns about the use, referring to SBY’s commitment back in 2013. During that time when SBY paid a visit to Aceh, the president vowed that he would finish all matter on Aceh before his term is over.
