TEMPO.CO, York - The Church of England will finally have women as bishops after a historic vote in the General Synod, ending 40 years of debate. The Telegraph reported that 251 voted in favor while 72 voted against the appointment of women bishops. Regardless, the result will first have to be brought before the Church Parliament for further consideration. Shall the verdict pass, the council will announce it on November 17, 2014.
The controversy of having a woman bishop in the British Anglican Church has been raging for decades. Right about 20 years ago, the Church of England called that women can be bishops, triggering massive protests from the opposition. The major concern from the opposition is that female bishop has lesser authority on carrying out the task.
The voting serves as a historical milestione in the British Anglican Church. In other Anglican Nations such as the United States, Australia, and Canada, female bishop is a common thing to find at church.
