Soekarno-Hatta Airport Increases Runway Capacity

26 June 2014 18:44 WIB

Bandara Soekarno-Hatta Tambah Kapasitas Runway

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Effective today, the capacity of two runways in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is increased from 64 to 72 aircraft per hour. The increase was intended to minimize flight delays, especially ahead of the Eid holiday.

"We hope to reduce delays and arrivals so that the service at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport can increase," president director of PT Angkasa Pura II, Tri S. Sunoko, said yesterday.

To increase the runway capacity, Angkasa Pura II works with the Indonesian Air Navigation Services Operator Institute (LPPNI). LPPNI has shortened the occupancy period for aircraft to takeoff from 110 seconds to 90 seconds. Meanwhile, landing occupancy period was reduced from 65 seconds to 50 seconds.

LPPNI director of safety and standards Wisnu Darjono had said that, since October 2013, the runway capacity of the runway at CGK reached 64 flights per hour. Before October, the capacity was 52 flights per hour. "By next year we will try to increase it to 86 flights per hour."

Sriwijaya Air spokesman Agus Sujono said there are consequences that the airport—as the terminal manager—must anticipate. If at certain hours [the number of] flights are optimized, there will be passengers buildup in the terminal. "The terminal should anticipate; ensuring passengers' comfort," said Agus.

To date, the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has approximately 1,200 scheduled flights every day. The volume puts CGK among 10 of the world's busiest airports according to the Airport Council International (ACI).
