TEMPO.CO, New York - New York soccer fans in Brazil may return home with a virus outbreak possibility. Senator Charles Schumer has bugged out about the possibility that fans attending the World Cup in Brazil could bring a contagious mosquito-born Chikungunya or Chik-V virus back to the United States.
“Visitors could return home to their countries with memorabilia, photographs, great stories to tell and perhaps a very painful virus,” said Schumer, as cited by the New York Post. “The World Cup will serve as an incubator for this virus to spread.”
Therefore, the senator urged the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to issue an immediate health alert to doctors in New York and around the country.
Schumer also called on the Department of Homeland Security to issue a “public emergency”, meaning that there will be increased inspections at US ports towards travelers and products from Brazil.
