TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazilian police and striking subway workers were involved in a clash on Monday in a central commuter station. The union officials threatened to maintain the strike through the World Cup opening match in Sao Paulo this week.
Mashable reported that authorities are deeply worried about the strike as the subway is the main means of transportation for World Cup fans. Jurandir Fernandes, Sao Paulo state's transport secretary, said on Monday that 60 of the striking workers had been fired.
On the other hand, union officials negotiated with government authorities on Monday in an attempt to end the strike. However, there has not been a reached deal, causing government enforcers to disperse the crowd by force. "This is the way they negotiate, with tear gas and repression," said Alexandre Roland, a union leader.
