Logistics Association Questions Removal of Pelni CEO

22 May 2014 15:52 WIB

TEMPO/Fahmi Ali

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Secretary general of the Indonesian Logistics and Forwarders Association (ALFI) Yuki Nugraha said he was shocked at the removal of Syahril Japarin as the CEO of state-owned shipping firm PT Pelni. According to him, Syahril is capable of spearheading the company.

“I know that Syahril is a good and capable person. I don’t understand what has happened,” Yuki told Tempo on Wednesday, May 21, 2014.

State-owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan has dismissed Syahril Japarin from his post and appointed Sulistyo Wimbo Hardjito as his sucessor. Syahril’s dismissal was reportedly attributable to the poor performance of PT Pelni under his leadership.

Yuki has questioned Syahril’s removal. He said Syahril took over Pelni’s leadership when the company suffered a US$16.7-million loss. He added Syahril was also the one taking care of the company’s loss ensuing from the loan exchange rate in 2007, taxes on Pelni subsidiaries’ spin-off, and oil price hike.

“I think those problems were not easy to address, but I was quite sure that he had good plans to resolve it,” Yuki said.
