TEMPO.CO, Rome - Italian Police have captured two suspects involved in the accident of an immigrant ship that killed 17 people, Monday, in the Mediterranean Sea, about 160 kilometers from Southern Lampedusa Island.
Today, the two suspects from North Africa could face charges of murder for alleged negligence which has caused the ship sunk.
According to an attorney in Sicily, both could have shut down the engine as an effort to save lives. However, they still kept sailing. This is the cause that finally ruined the ship and made it drown.
This happens to be the latest incident from a series of tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea that involves immigrants.
Italy feels distraught with the immigrant waves that keeps continuing. Especially when many use whichever ships available and finally drowned. Within a month, Italy must spend a budget of 9 million Euros (Rp140 billion) for rescue operations and sea patrol.
Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi, pushes European Union (EU) to give more support in handling immigrants, such as placing patrol ships in areas of the sea.
