TEMPO.CO, Kiev - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that he will be acting as a mediator to try and ease tensions in Ukraine, where dozens of people have died in conflict between pro-Russian separatists and supporters of a unified Ukraine.
"I have been discussing this matter with all the parties concerned - Ukranian leaders, leaders of the Russian federation, the European Union, and Americans," Ban told Zee News on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.
Ban said that he was deeply concerned by the violence in Ukraine and called on all parties to implement the Geneva agreement.
"I am urging these four parties to solve this problem through peaceful means and I’m ready to provide my own role if necessary," he said.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that Germany had discussed a second agreement in Geneva with Russia, the United States, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) to end Ukraine's crisis.
The first Geneva agreement was reached on April 17, but looks dead in the water after Russia said the deal was over because Kiev stepped up its military operation to fight separatist groups. Russia called the operations as "war against its own people."
