TEMPO.CO, Kiev - The United States ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt, said that an "inevitable, sharp reaction" should be expected from the US if Russian troops were to cross the border into Ukraine. Pyatt, as cited by Al Jazeera, said that such a move would be "a major escalation".
Recent development showed that the Russian is massing tens of thousands of troops in areas near the Ukrainian border. The action rises concerns that Moscow intended to use the unrest in the eastern part of Ukraine as a pretext for an invasion. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) estimated that around 40,000 of Russians troops are ready for sudden deployment in the border.
Pyatt added that the Ukrainian government had been advised not to use force to clear a number of government buildings seized by pro-Russian protesters. The separatists have seized city halls, police stations and other government buildings in at least 10 cities and towns across eastern Ukraine, in relation to their demand for a referendum.
