TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) of the Transportation Ministry, Santoso Eddy Wibowo, said that Indonesia is still short of pilots. "For the period of 2015 to 2019, Indonesia still lacks 700 pilots per year," he said, Friday, April 4, 2014.
Eddy also said that for the next five years, Indonesia has to have 3,000 new pilots. The average BPSDM graduate, however, is 70 to 90 pilots per year.
In addition to pilots, Santoso added, Indonesia also lacks air traffic controllers (ATC) and sailors.
For the record, around 1,600 to 1,700 sailors graduate every year from BPSDM and this figure is still lower than the need for sailors, which is 15,000 for the period of 2015 to 2019.
As for ATC, it is estimated that Indonesia still lacks around 200 to 300 ATC per year, while ATC graduates from BPSDM is only 120 to 130 people per year. This figure is lower than the targeted 945 ATC graduates.
Santoso also mentioned several human resources problems in the transportation sector.
According to him, currently there is a gap between human resources available and the number needed. He also said that human resources management in the sector has not been well directed, including in terms of their competence and carrier development.
