TEMPO.CO, Lombardy - Italian police have arrested 40 people suspected of having affiliation with 'Ndrangheta mafia group based in the Calabria region in southern Italy. They were arrested yesterday in Lombardy, north Italy.
As quoted by Xinhua, police said the suspects were arrested on charges of money laundering, extortion, corruption, illegal credit operations and false property and company ownerships.
The mafia tends to intimidate and be violent towards the people of Italy. Violence is also used to win disputes between members, which is considered to be the richest and most powerful mafia family in Italy.
The clan's boss, Giuseppe Pensabene, is one of the ones arrested. He plays a role as a "secret bank" working together with corrupt businessmen and state officials. Among them are two football team managers.
The mafia has been the biggest issue for Italy. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has committed that the eradication of the mafia will be top priority. He will also bring the issue over to the European Union (EU) since the mafia is not Italy's only problem now.
