TEMPO.CO, Tokyo - As nuclear has been the most vital electricity source in Japan, the government unveiled its first draft of nuclear energy policy since the Fukushima meltdowns in 2011 due to earthquake.
The Associated Press reported the draft was presented to the Cabinet yesterday to be approved in March.
The draft of the basic energy plan mentioned that a mix of nuclear, renewables and fossil fuel will be the most reliable and stable source of electricity to meet the country’s energy needs.
The devastating earthquake on March 11, 2011, had destroyed a number of Japan’s nuclear reactors causing the country to find alternative energy source.
Although Japan said it had reduced its dependence on nuclear energy, the country realized that nuclear energy is still needed and plans to restart Fukushima reactor. Japan has 48 commercial reactors but they are all offline until it passes a new safety requirements.
