TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Liang Kaspe, Operational Director of Surabaya zoo said the zoo is expected to have new addition of animals in the near future as some animals are now pregnant and some will hatch their eggs.

"We are going to have new animals in the next one month approximately," he told the journalists at the zoo today. Liang said that several animals in the zoo are now pregnant, such as a proboscis and a hippo.

The pregnancy period of a hippo is around nine months and the animal is now 8-month pregnant. He also said that dozens of komodo eggs are now ready to be hatched.

With such condition, Liang asserted that the management has done its best to preserve its collection of animals.

Commenting on the recent deaths of several animals in the zoo, Liang claimed that it was 'an acceptable thing'.

"We can't have a 0% death of animals. We are not God," Liang said, adding that the management pledged to continue to improve its nurturing and handling of the animals, ranging from food, medical treatment and the cleanliness of their environment and cages.

"That way, all the animals can live properly," he said.
