TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fast mass transportation is proven to be one the things in a country's bucket list, including Malaysia. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is currently being developed and targeted for completion in 2016.
"We have to start now if we want Kuala Lumpur to flourish," said Director of Marketing and Public Relations Strategy of MRT Corp Malaysia, Amir Mahmood Razak, when met by MRT Journalists group program last weekend.
Kuala Lumpur is very much like Jakarta. Of the 2.2 million citizens, Amir said, only 200 thousand who routinely use public transportation. The rest choose to use private transportation. This of course causes more traffic problems.
In December 2016, Malaysia planning to build MRT corridor spanning 51 kilometers which connects Buloh River west of Kuala Lumpur and Kajang on the east side. This plan is hoped to give an ease of access to public transportation for the 1.8 to 2 million people's daily activities. "The target is to decrease the use of 10 to 20 thousand cars from the streets of Kuala Lumpur," said Amir.
