TEMPO.CO, Tripoli - Libya's Deputy Prime Minister Sadiq Abdulkarim has survived an assassination attempt in the capital Tripoli yesterday.
Gunmen opened fire when Deputy PM Sadiq Abdulkarim was on his way from the Interior Ministry to the General National Congress assembly. Officials in the prime minister's office gave no further details about the shooting.
"I tell those who did it that Libya is bigger than you and Libya’s men will not be threatened by bullets, guns or rockets," Abdulkarim said in a two-minute statement on television, as cited on timesofmalta.com
The identity of the attackers was unclear, an interior ministry official added.
Libya is struggling to contain dozens of militias who helped topple Muammar Gaddafi in a 2011 uprising. The militia kept their guns and has regularly challenged the authority of the new government.
Parts of the country are already effectively under the control of militias, armed tribesmen and Islamist groups.
